Respected Principal, Teachers, Parents, and my dear fellow students,
Today, we gather here to celebrate the 76th Independence Day of our beloved nation, India. On this auspicious occasion, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude as we remember the heroes who fought for our freedom. As Rabindranath Tagore once said, “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high,” we stand tall today, a sovereign nation, thanks to the sacrifices of our brave ancestors.
As we celebrate this day, let us draw inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s profound words, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Each one of us has the power to contribute to our nation’s growth and prosperity. Let us strive to be responsible citizens who work towards the welfare of our society.
On this day, let us also remember the diversity that defines our great land. As former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said, “We have not invaded anyone. We have not conquered anyone. We have not grabbed their land, their culture, and their history and tried to enforce our way of life on them.” Our strength lies in our unity amidst diversity, and we must continue to embrace and respect all cultures and religions.
“Every citizen of India must remember that he is an Indian and he has every right in this country, but with certain duties,” said Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. On this Independence Day, let us pledge to fulfil our duties towards our nation with sincerity and dedication.
As we hoist our tricolour flag high, let us be reminded of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s words, “Give me blood, and I will give you freedom.” Our freedom came at a significant cost, and we must ensure that their sacrifices were not in vain.
One of the most iconic figures in this movement was Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. His philosophy of non-violence, or Satyagraha, became the guiding light for our struggle for independence. As Gandhiji said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” His principle of leading by example inspired millions to join the fight for freedom, through non-cooperation, civil disobedience, and peaceful protests.
The Quit India Movement of 1942, spearheaded by leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, saw widespread mass protests against the British rule. Their unwavering resolve to free India from foreign domination inspired countless men and women to make great sacrifices for the cause.
Finally, on the midnight of August 15, 1947, the long-awaited moment arrived. As the clock struck twelve, the Indian tricolour was unfurled, and the words of Jawaharlal Nehru echoed across the nation, “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.”
Since that momentous day, India has come a long way. From being a newly independent nation grappling with the challenges of partition, poverty, and illiteracy, we have evolved into a thriving democracy with a booming economy and a global presence.
But our journey does not end here. As we stand on the threshold of the future, let us draw strength from our history and the struggles of our ancestors. Let us pledge to build an India that is free from poverty, discrimination, and injustice. An India where every citizen can realize their dreams and aspirations.
On this Independence Day, let us celebrate the spirit of freedom, cherish our diversity, and remember the sacrifices of our heroes. As we continue to write the history of our great nation, let us be guided by the words of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, “Citizenship consists in the service of the country.”
