Registration involves adding a specific person’s name to the vehicle’s registration. When the vehicle is purchased, this is done. It is against the law to operate a car in India without a current registration. Once a car is registered, you are legally permitted to drive it anywhere inside India’s borders.
It used to be a very time-consuming process to register a car in one’s name, but it seems like a long time ago. As a part of the “Digital India” initiative, the Indian government has developed its official website, known as “Vahan.” The entire process is now very straightforward. You may now easily follow the process without experiencing any difficulty as a result.
How do I register my car?
The procedure of getting your car’s licence plate and registering it on the government’s registry and records is known as vehicle registration. The primary goal of registration is to establish a connection between you, the owner, and your car through a unique identification number, which is why a car registration number plate is shown. It is crucial that you register your car so that the Indian government can stop any illegal activity. The ability to obtain valid insurance coverage without it is one of the most crucial reasons to register a car.
Section 39A of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 states that a vehicle may only be driven on public highways after being registered with the appropriate transport authority. As a result, the registration certificate is a valid legal document that serves as evidence that your car has been registered and confirmed in government databases. In India, registration must be completed no later than seven days after the car is delivered.
What is a vehicle’s re-registration?
A vehicle needs to be “RE”-registered, or registered anew, in 2 circumstances. These circumstances are:
Situation 1: According to the Central Motor Vehicles Act, all private vehicles must be reregistered after 15 years from the date of the initial registration. After that, the registration is renewed every five years until the RTO deems the vehicle safe and suitable for use on Indian roads.
Situation 2: If you relocate with your vehicle from one state to another, you must re-register it.
According to the legislation, if a motor vehicle that is registered in one state is present in another state for more than a year for any cause that is legal, you must transfer your vehicle to the new state and RE-register it. There is no need to re-register your vehicle if you only visit another state for a period of 12 months or less.
If your stay is more than 12 months, you must apply for a Transfer and Re-Registration. The steps in the vehicle transfer process are:
You must complete out the necessary paperwork and send it to the new RTO in the appropriate jurisdiction for the assignment or re-registration of the car, as the registered owner of the vehicle must make an application to the same RTO where the vehicle was registered.
As required by the Central Government, the full process must be finished within a year.
The process for renewing a vehicle’s registration
Re-registration procedures for the car under the following situations:
Situation 1: You must submit an application form if you want to re-register your car beyond the initial registration period of 15 years. Your car must be brought in for inspection at the RTO, and you must pay the required charge. The RTO will be able to issue a new Registration Certificate or RC once the car has been examined and all other paperwork have been validated. The RTO must receive the following documents in order to renew a vehicle’s registration:
A valid Pollution Under Control Certificate or the PUC, properly filled out Form Number 25 (which is the application for renewal of registration),
Position with regard to vehicle hypothecation: If the vehicle had been financed and the financer had made a hypothecation on the registration certificate. In this situation, obtaining the No Objection Certificate, or NOC, from the appropriate financier is necessary in advance so that you can easily register your vehicle in the other required state.
Road Tax: If you transfer a car from one state to another, you may be required to pay the new state’s road tax at the vehicle’s depreciated value. If you need to request a road tax refund from the state where you are going for the remaining period of the tax’s validity, you must do so when you move.
How to renew your car’s registration
For a better understanding, let’s look at the three main phases of renewing a vehicle’s registration in more detail:
Obtaining the No Objection Certificate, or NOC, is the first step for you.
You should keep in mind a few things when applying for a NOC:
You must provide a self-declaration affidavit that has been notarized and stamped on paper costing INR 10 declaring that all pertinent documentation for the vehicle are original and that there are no outstanding payments due for the vehicle.
The National Crime Record Bureau, or NCRB, should provide a No Objection Certificate certifying that the car is not a stolen one.
If the car had been financed and the debt hadn’t been returned, a No Objection Certificate in Form Number 35 from the financier was required.
Form No. 27, which is the request for the assignment of a new registration, and Form No. 28, which is the request and request for a certificate of no objection, combined with
NOCs from the traffic police, the NCRB, and the financier in order to get the NOC from the appropriate RTO
The PUC Certificate, a copy of the smart card, a copy of the chassis imprint, a proof of identity, and a proof of address are additional vehicle documentation that must be supplied.
The RTO will subsequently, in a matter of 1-2 weeks, issue an interstate vehicle transfer NOC.
Step 2: The following documents must be submitted in order to renew your vehicle’s registration in another state:
Smart Cards, Insurance Documents, Pollution Under Control or PUC Certificates are examples of documents that must be presented in their original form.
The original invoice, which the RTO needs to calculate the vehicle’s depreciation on the basis of for road taxes.
Step 3: Re-registering the vehicle and paying the road tax
Following the aforementioned process, you can submit an application for the car’s re-registration and pay the necessary road tax with a specific set of paperwork for the vehicle, your personal documents, NOCs, etc. You must submit the following paperwork to the RTO.
Re-registration of the car can be done using Forms 20 (application for vehicle registration) and 33 (application for notification of address change).
If you own a used car, you must provide the necessary paperwork for the transfer of ownership.
After the car is registered, you can submit an application for a tax refund if necessary.
